Building the Klei Entertainment Website: A Unique Site for a Studio with Style
Klei Entertainment has a reputation for crafting some of the most distinct, beloved indie games out there — Don’t Starve, Mark of the Ninja, Oxygen Not Included, Griftlands, and more. Their games have personality, polish, and a clear identity — and their studio website needed to do the same.
When I was brought in to help develop Klei’s new site, I knew this wasn’t going to be a standard studio build. The site had to reflect the creativity and care that Klei puts into every project, while also serving practical needs like updates, job listings, and press resources.
The Mission
The goals for the site were clear:
Showcase Klei’s full catalogue of games with a consistent, branded layout
Provide regular news updates and patch notes
Support a growing Careers section to attract new talent
Offer press kits and game media in a clean, easy-to-navigate structure
Stay light, fast, and scalable without sacrificing visual flair
This wasn’t just about representing the games — it was about capturing the spirit of the studio.
Design & Collaboration
As with many of my projects, design came from Mike Heald at Fully Illustrated. For Klei’s site, the visual direction leaned into minimalism with character — strong typography, subtle textures, and thoughtful use of game imagery.
The challenge was creating something modern and responsive that didn’t overcomplicate what made Klei’s brand so recognizable. Simplicity, delivered with care.
The Build
I used my go-to modern stack:
Nuxt 3 for the frontend framework — fast, flexible, and great for dynamic content
Storyblok for content management, giving the Klei team full control of everything from dev blogs to job listings
Netlify for hosting and deployments, ensuring fast global load times and a smooth build pipeline
Key development highlights included:
A dynamic Games section with structured game pages for each title
A flexible News & Updates system, built to handle everything from patch notes to studio announcements
A Careers page that showcases open roles while highlighting studio culture and values
A Media/Press section for each game, with downloadables, trailers, and platform info
Everything was built to be expandable — whether Klei is launching a new title or revisiting a classic, the CMS gives them full control without added complexity.
Why It Stood Out
Klei is a studio with a strong identity and a passionate fanbase. Building their main website meant creating something that respected that legacy while offering a better experience for players, press, and potential new hires alike.
It’s one thing to build a clean, responsive site — it’s another to build one that truly feels like Klei. That was the goal, and I’m proud of how it came together.
Final Thoughts
Working with Klei was a pleasure — both because of the team and because of the chance to help bring a studio’s personality to life on the web. Their games stand out in the industry, and their site needed to stand right alongside them.
