Building the Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Website — Living the Fan Dream

As a lifelong Ghostbusters fan, finding out I’d be working on the official website for Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed was one of those rare moments where work and personal passion collide in the best way possible. When IllFonic revealed they’d been quietly developing a new game in the Ghostbusters universe, it honestly felt surreal to be part of that reveal — and to help bring the online presence to life.

This wasn’t just another game site for me. It was Ghostbusters. And that meant it had to be done right.

The Mission

The goal was to create a polished, atmospheric website that:

  • Built hype and intrigue leading up to the game’s reveal

  • Reflected the tone of the Ghostbusters universe — spooky, fun, and iconic

  • Highlighted trailers, platform availability, and pre-order options

  • Provided press and content creators with media assets

  • Stayed scalable as the game launched and continued to grow post-release

It had to feel like Ghostbusters — not just in visuals, but in vibe.

Design & Atmosphere

Design was handled by Mike Heald at Fully Illustrated, and he absolutely nailed the tone. The layout featured smoky textures, proton beam accents, and bold, cinematic visuals that instantly pulled you into the world of the game.

As a developer and a fan, I wanted to make sure the experience matched the excitement — so every detail, animation, and hover state was built with care to enhance the feel without distracting from the content.

The Stack

For the tech, I stuck with the stack that handles both performance and flexibility:

  • Nuxt 3 for the frontend — fast, lightweight, and flexible

  • Storyblok as the CMS — so IllFonic could manage content without needing to call in dev help every time

  • Netlify for hosting — quick deploys, reliable performance, and scale-friendly

The site was built to handle major traffic — especially around reveals and pre-orders — and deliver that same smooth experience across devices.

Key Features

  • A cinematic homepage with key art, platform info, and trailer embeds

  • CMS-powered game feature sections, press info, and pre-order blocks

  • A flexible media & press area with downloadable assets and trailers

  • Smooth scroll effects and animations that bring a ghostly vibe without overloading the page

  • Optimized for SEO, load speed, and accessibility — because fans shouldn’t have to wait to get their hands on the details

Why This One Meant So Much

Let’s be honest: working on Ghostbusters was a dream come true. I grew up with this franchise — the films, the toys, the cartoons — so being able to contribute to its legacy, even in a small way, was incredibly meaningful. And the fact that it wasn’t just a fun IP cash-in, but a genuinely cool asymmetrical multiplayer experience from a talented team? That made it even better.

Getting to help launch Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed into the world was an experience I won’t forget.

Final Thoughts

Some projects are technically satisfying. Some are creatively inspiring. This one was both — with a massive bonus of childhood nostalgia thrown in. I’m proud of the work, proud of the team, and proud to have played a part in something that means so much to so many.
